The background is white porcelain and colors of orange, green, yellow and blue appear in the flowers & butterflies on each of the four sides. The neck rises out of borders of blue & yellow and orange & white porcelain. The two lids are white porcelain with orange borders and green & orange flowers on the tops.
There are specs of orange on the white porcelain background. The bottoms of the tea caddies have unfinished porcelain with a finished white porcelain square in the center. There is a six character Chinese marking in orange and "CHINA" in the white porcelain squares. The marking of CHINA dates the tea caddies to circa 1880 - 1920. I have not been able to identify the Chinese period marked on the bottom.
The tea caddies could have been used in China or made for export outside China (which required the county of origin to be identified). Tea drinking became very fashionable in the 18th century and tea imported from the "far east" was quite expensive. Around this time, Chinese export porcelain became highly prized outside of China and was often used when tea was served. This stand is not original to the tea caddies. The stand has a dark stain which shows some of the nice wood graining.
There is hand carved open work on two sides. The stand sits on four feet in the corners. The stand is collectible by itself.
I bought the matching tea caddies many years ago in California. They are in excellent antique condition with expected wear. There appears to be a very tiny chip in the bottom rim of one lid. This chip does not show when the lid sits on the tea caddy. There are characteristics of old porcelain visible such as tiny dots. There could be surface scratches from use. Otherwise, there are no chips, cracks, repairs or damage to the tea caddies. The stand is in excellent condition with normal wear. The top has separated a little from the frame of the stand and you can see a little glue in the crack.
The top is sturdy and the stand supports the tea caddies nicely. There are surface scratches on the stand from normal usage. There are no chips, cracks, missing parts, repairs or other damage. Height with lid: 5 3/4. Length of sides: 3 1/4.
Marked: Chinese Marking & CHINA. These charming and colorful old export porcelain tea caddies & stands would be a nice addition to any collection of Asian art or antiques.
